I am a sucker for book offers, freebies and recommendations from friends. Someone mentions a book they like and it’s straight on my Amazon Wishlist, then I think – bugger it – and I buy it immediately. Here are some I’ve bought or been given and enjoyed in 2015: “Anything you want” by Derek Sivers. Via Sithan, I emailed Derek a couple of years ago – only just got around to buying his book and it’s excellent – very simple and…

Tia is the original host of meal with 9others in Sydney. She’s over in London now and I mentioned Amy my ‘new PA’. Tia hadn’t heard of Amy so I told her all about her/it and the other two tools that have made life much easier recently, so I wanted to share them here too. 1. Amy is an AI PA. Once you’re set up you just cc her into an email and she takes care of all the back-and-forth scheduling arrangements. Once Amy agrees a time and…

I’d hazard a guess that most Airbnb hosts and most Airbnb guests don’t know who Brian is. The startup crowd all know the story of them selling Obama O’s and Cap’n McCains and the email exchanges between PG and Fred, but it’s not important if you’re listing on Airbnb now – you just want it to work and give you the cash. Airbnb are way beyond the famous founder and that’s good – success starts at the fringes but that’s not where all…

I have a Post-it note above my desk at home on which I wrote, “Think how Travis feels when he pisses off an entire city”. I wrote it and stuck it up there after I thought I’d screwed up a bit. I knew it would happen again. I wanted to remember that the emotion I feel – the one when things aren’t going right, when I mess up, say the wrong thing or worry about someone not liking what I’m…

There are generally three ‘idea challenges’ people worry about, especially when challenged by potential investors. The thing about these, though, are that you still have to out-operate the others and you can’t do anything about what they do anyway. 1. No one has come up with this before This is the, “If it was such a good idea someone would have done it by now” challenge. People say they want original and creative ideas but when they hear of something…

It’s funny where people take you. Above is the first meal with 9others in San Francisco almost exactly 3 years after Katie blurted out, “Let’s do 12 cities in 12 months” back in July 2012. That ‘blurt’ was in response to us thinking what it would mean to scale 9others – we knew we didn’t want to do dozens of meals a night with dozens of people but if a meal with 9others worked in London, would it work in other cities?…

Right from launch 9others set out to connect the best entrepreneurs across London and then the world. We knew that their success required the aid of others. Our only objective was to find a way to connect people in a curated and small environment where good people could share challenges and opportunities with others who are ‘in their shoes, but not in their business’. The buzz Katie and I got from hosting meals with 9others was, and still is, seeing…
